‘Useless hai ye ODI mai’ – Fans react as Marnus Labuschagne set to replace injured Ashton Agar in Australia’s ODI World Cup 2023 squad
Australia has suffered yet another blow ahead of the ODI World Cup 2023. Ashton Agar, one of their main spinners, is ruled out of the ODI World Cup 2023. Since the tournament will be happening in India, where spinners have a big role, the news of Agar missing out the tournament will be a big blow for the Australian team. Agar could have been handy in the Indian conditions as a spin-bowling All-rounder.
Earlier this year, Ashton Agar sustained a calf injury, which ruled him out of the South African ODI series. Following it, Agar missed the series as he expected the birth of his first child. But the injury of the Australian spinner seems to be not recovering before the tournament, which has ruled him out of the big event. The reports suggest that Agar might not be available for Australia soon and might need more time to be fully fit.
In the absence of Agar, the reports suggest that Marnus Labuschagne is said to be the front runner as a replacement. For starters, Labuschagne is an anchor, who can control the run flow in the middle overs. The middle order batter is also a capable bowler, who can roll his arms. In the Indian conditions, the traits of Labuschagne will be helpful for Australia.
Promising numbers of Marnus Labuschagne against South Africa and India
Labuschagne has made a decent comeback to the Australian side since the South African series. Against proteas, Labuschagne was the highest run scorer in the series. In 5 matches, the middle order batter scored 283 runs at a batting average of 70.75, at a batting strike rate of 96.59, including a hundred and a fifty. Labuschagne had good numbers against India as well.
In three matches in the series against India, Labuschagne scored 138 runs – The third most for a batter in the series. Labuschagne averaged 46.00 in the series with the bat and had a strike rate of 100.00. The 29-year-old scored a fifty as well. If the reports and the current form of Labuschagne are to be believed, he might be the eventual replacement of Agar.
