India and Bangladesh played out a nail-biting ODI in the third game which took place in Dhaka. Bangladesh won the toss and chose to bat first. Even though they got off to a slow start they got a grandstand finish in the end they got to 22-4 in their 50 overs. The series was tied 1-1. The third ODI ended up as a thriller because the game finished as a tie. For Bangladesh, Fargana Hoque scored a scintillating 107 off 160 balls with seven fours. In the second innings, despite fighting a knock of 77 off 108 balls, India could not chase it down.

The main event that was most talked about was Harmanpreet Kaur’s outburst on the umpiring in Bangladesh. She was fuming after she was given out lbw. The Indian skipper bashed the stumps with her bat and that incident did not make for good viewing. Kaur is going to be handed out three demerit points for the incident. There was a lot of outrage on social media for Kaur’s act and many questioned her sportsmanship and integrity. While some of the fans called her act brave after she spoke at the post-match presentation and termed the umpiring decisions as “pathetic”.

After the game, Bangladesh skipper Nigar Sultana Jyoti had some strong words to say to Kaur after her rant on the umpiring. “I went there to play the match. So let me speak about cricket. Neither were we bothered about the pitch nor did we think about the umpires. Every player from our team tried to give their 100 per cent. I am not concerned about what they are thinking,” Jyoti said at the post-match press conference.

“It’s what she did and we have nothing to do about it. But as a player, she should have spoken with a bit of manners. It’s completely her matter and I would not want to make any comments on her. There were some talks which I cannot disclose. But I felt the environment was not right and so we left the place. Cricket is a respectful sport and is a gentlemen’s game,”. The Bangladesh skipper added.

Have very high respect for Harmanpreet Kaur, as player/leader.
But that does not excuse her behaviour in the BD match.
Whatever the provocation, however shoddy the umpiring, that is not expected of an India Captain.
Am sure it was a momentary lapse and will not happen again.

Attitude and behaviour are equally important along with the skill of cricketing. As the captain of the team she should have controlled her act of showing displeasure. But ICC should also look into standards of Umpiring where they should also be awarded a demerit point.
