The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 has been thoroughly entertaining, action-packed and has seen the highest powerplay scores throughout the season. This has also been partly because of the impact player rule which has extended the batting lineup. This tournament has also seen the most sixes, fours and hundreds being made. This could mean that the batters are batting at a higher strike rate. But when Ishan Kishan was asked about this, he had a different point of view.

“Strike Rate and average are overrated in T20s. You’ve to take risks in a high run chase, but when the pitch is tricky like Lucknow, there’s no role of 250 Strike Rate there”. While he is right on some counts, a lot of fans begged to differ and said that in a fast-paced format like T20 higher strike rates are the need of the hour. They also formed a parallel and said that India are losing big matches in T20 World Cups because of batting with a low strike rate.

Talking about Kishan, he has not managed to set the IPL 2023 on fire. Though the Mumbai Indians opener has racked up 454 runs at a strike rate of 142.76, he has failed to provide fast starts at the top of the order for MI and has only played a couple of impactful innings. KL Rahul also said that strike rates do not matter in T20 cricket. The strike rate has been a big debate in the Indian Premier League. Virat Kohli was also criticised for batting slowly in IPL 2023 at times.

Simon Doull spoke on the same issue and said that Kohli is guilty of batting slowly specially in the middle overs and should keep switching gears once he gets himself in. Doull further alleged that Kohli was playing for personal milestones and that personal records have no room in T20 cricket or in any form of the game.

Qualifier 2 will be played on 26th May between Gujarat Titans and MI at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. it will be very interesting to see which Mumbai Indian will trump the other at Gujarat to book a place in the final against Chennai Super Kings.
