Gujarat started the Indian T20 League 2023 on a bright note as they defeated Chennai by five wickets in the first game of the league. However, Gujarat will be without the services of Kane Williamson for the rest of the tournament. The New Zealand cricketer picked up a knee injury when he landed badly trying to save a six hit by Ruturaj Gaikwad. He saved the six but landed on his knee and had to be helped off the field.
Williamson was gutted to be leaving the Gujarat camp early and missing the Indian T20 League. It is a big blow for New Zealand as Williamson could be in doubt for the ODI World Cup in India which starts in October. His side, New Zealand has done well at home. They trounced Sri Lanka 2-0 in the three-match ODI series. The Blackcaps then lost a nail-biting T20I that went into a Super Over.
Gujarat won the Indian T20 League in 2022 in their debut season
Gujarat, however, had a good game as they beat Chennai at Ahmedabad. Shubman Gill was the top scorer for Gujarat. The right-hander was in sublime touch as he crafted an unbeaten 63 off 36 balls with six fours and three sixes. The Hardik Pandya-led side also received some other vital contributions. Sai Sudharsan made 22 off 17 balls with three fours. Vijay Shankar chipped in with a vital 27 off 21 balls with two fours and one six.
The finishing touches were nicely put in by Rahul Tewatia and Rashid Khan. The duo were as cool as ice in a high-pressure run chase. Tewatia had bailed out Gujarat in high-pressure run chases in the 2022 Indian T20 League as well as Gujarat won the Indian T20 League in 2022. The left-hander was at it again.
2022 was their debut season and the franchise had two astute coaches in Gary Kirsten and Ashish Nehra. The likes of David Miller, Pandya, Rashid Khan and Tewatia punched above their weight. These contributions ensured an Indian T20 League title in Gujrat’s first season. They have started the 2023 season on the right note as well.
