‘Total Domination’ – Fans react as Lyca Kovai Kings beat Nellai Royal Kings by 104 runs in TNPL 2023 final

The Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) has been a wonderful tournament and has been scouring new heights, The competition keeps getting better and unearths a lot of new talent every year. The final of the 2023 edition concluded on Wednesday, July 12. The Lyca Kovai Kings and the Nellai Royal Kings locked horns at the Indian Cement Cricket Ground in Tirunelveli. Kovai Kings won the toss and chose to bat.

The Kovai Kings batters came out swinging, Wicketkeeper batter Suresh Kumar made 57 off 33 balls with fours and three sixes to set the tone. The batters kept scoring at a fantastic clip to apply pressure on the Royal Kings bowlers. Atheeq ur Rahman came down the order and played a fabulous knock of 50 off 21 balls with eight fours and one six. The innings took the wind out of the Royal Kings’ sails.

The Kovai Kings also had U Mukilesh who played the role of the anchor batter while the others went hammer and tonk. The right-handed batter made a patient but valuable unbeaten 51 off 40 balls with four fours and one six. These contributions helped Kovai Kings to reach a monstrous total of 205-5 in their 20 overs. Sonu Yadav and Sandeep Warrier picked up two wickets each in their four-over spells.

The Royal Kings did not get going as the bowlers from Kovai Kings kept picking up wickets. Jhatavedh Subramanyan picked up 4-21 in his four overs. The leg spinners showed what he could do in the tournament as well as the big match. Subramanyan is mentored by former India leg spinner Laxman Sivaramakrishnan. Kovai Kings captain Shah Rukh Khan took 3-16 in his four overs spell as he ended up with 17 wickets in the tournament and also was the Purple Cap holder.

It was dominating show put up by the Kovai Kings as they trounced the Royal Kings by a whopping 104 runs. The TNPL has been a wonderful exhibition of cricket at the highest quality that continues to give for Tamil Nadu Cricket and make its ecosystem stronger. Tamil Nadu interestingly have not won a Ranji Trophy title.
