It was the semifinal of the 1996 ODI World Cup in Eden Gardens, Kolkata. India was the favourite to win the match given the better team on paper, the home advantage, and the support of the crowd. It seemed so at the start of the match, as Javagal Srinath reduced Sri Lanka to 35/3 in no time. The crowd was up on its feet.

The celebrations of Indians were momentary, as the likes of Aravinda De Silva and Roshan Mahanama, Arjuna Ranatunga, Hashan Tillakaratne, and Chaminda Vaas contributed with the bat. In their 50 overs, Sri Lanka managed to post a challenging total of 251 runs on the board.

Chasing the target, India was going well with 98/1 at one stage. What followed was an absolute shocker for the fans. From that stage, India was reduced to 120/8 in no time, thanks to an unbelievable collapse from the Indian batters.

The fans in the stadium could not believe what happened and showed their frustration by throwing bottles. The match was stopped midway, and referee Clive Lloyd declared Sri Lanka as the winner. Vinod Kambli was seen crying on his way to the dressing room, which was heartbreaking to see.
