The Men’s ODI World Cup has been the pinnacle of cricket over the years. The first-ever edition of the tournament began in 1975. For the following 2 editions, England hosted the tournament, which was played for 60 overs per side and a red ball was used in the format. All the teams sported white jerseys back then. From then till now, the tournament has changed a lot.

But one thing has remained constant – The importance of batters. They score runs and help the teams to get to a total which cannot be chased easily by the opponents. The batters can be impactful in their stay in the middle. The bowlers fetch wickets for their captains. But the runs scored by batters are as important as the wickets claimed by the bowlers. The role of batters is hence very important in cricket.

There have been many great batters in the format who have played great innings in the tournament. AB De Villiers was incredible in two World Cups, in 2011 and 2015. In both the tournaments, De Villiers was one of the best batters in the tournament. Batting mostly at number 4 and 5, De Villiers changed the way of batting. The unorthodox batter scored runs very briskly and consistently. De Villiers was sensational as a finisher but anchored the innings as well. The South African batter has 4 hundred in the ODI World Cup.
