A bizarre incident took place at the 2023 Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) in the second game. The Chepauk Super Gillies (CSG) played against the Salem Spartans (SLST). CSG won the toss and choose to bat. CSG did well with the bat and they were 191-5 in the 19th over. The 20th over of the first innings was bowled by Abhishek Tanwar, who conceded three runs and a boundary in the first five balls. Then, the drama happened, he bowled four no-balls and a wide off of the last ball and gave away two sixes as well. This took the total number of runs to 18 on the last ball.

CSG finished with 217-5 in the 20th over of their innings. The right-arm bowler’s execution went pear-shaped in the last over as he conceded just 18 runs in his previous three overs. But the last overtook an eternity to finish as he was taken to the cleaners by Sanjay Yadav, who was the batter on strike. When the match finished, CSG was all over Salem Spartans as they beat them by 52 runs. In the end, Tanwar’s figures read 1-44 in 4 overs.

Bowling four no balls as a senior bowler was disappointing -Abhishek Tanwar

“I have to take the blame for the last over – four no-balls being a senior bowler was disappointing. The wind did not help as it played a huge role. We have planned that way as we have a lot of openers and there is confusion because of that, but after this game, we should have that sorted [on sending Kaushik Gandhi at 5],” Abhishek Tanwar said at the post-match presentation. The bowler and SLST skipper did not have a good game.

The TNPL has been a bloodline for churning out talent to Tamil Nadu cricket over the past few years. The league has given the southern state a lot of youngsters who have gone on to represent Tamil Nadu in first-class cricket. This edition of the TNPL will be played in four venues namely, Salem, Dindigul, Tirunelveli and Coimbatore. The next match will be played on Wednesday 14 June.
