India registered a comprehensive win by an innings and 141 runs at Dominica to take a 1-0 lead in the two-Test match series. Ravichandran Ashwin was one of the star performers for India as he picked up 12-131 against the Men in Maroon. The West Indies batters could not read Ashwin on a pitch that offered a bit of turn and were no match for his wizardry. Ashwin after that performance has 486 wickets in Tests and is inching close to the 500-wicket mark.

The bowling coach Paras Mhambrey was very upbeat and pleased with the players after a wonderful all-round win against the West Indies. Mhambrey further had special mention to Ashwin and lauded him for his exploits. The India bowling coach said that the Men from Tamil Nadu were one of India’s greatest match winners. Notably, fans criticised the Indian management for Ashwin’s non-inclusion in the World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia.

The way Yashasvi applied himself on that Dominica wicket was great to see – Paras Mhambrey

“When we came on the first day, the pitch looked a little dry and from the stats we’d seen of the local games here, the spinners had dominated. So we felt that as the game would progress, it’d get tougher for batting. The way Ash and Jadeja bowled deserves a lot of praise. If you ask me, Ashwin is one of our greatest match-winners. The way he’s won us matches, the way he’s performed over the years, what more do I say,” Mhambrey was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

The Indian batting also put on a great show against the West Indies as Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma notched up tons in Dominica. Jaiswal played a terrific knock of 171 off 387 balls with 16 fours and one six. Rohit hit a 103 off 221 balls with ten fours and two sixes. Big scores from these two ensured India got a solid platform at the top.

“When we batted, it was important to play long and score big and we did that. That became the base for the bowlers,” Mhambrey said. He also was chuffed for Yashasvi Jaiswal, he said,  Strokemaking wasn’t easy. If you look at the way he’s batted earlier, he’s the kind of a guy who likes to take on the game, likes to play his shots but the way he applied himself on that wicket was very good to see,” he added.
