Shubman Gill has been in great form in the last few innings in One Day Internationals. He has scored two hundreds in the 50-over format. One in Harare at Zimbabwe and one against Sri Lanka at home. He also broke the record books for becoming the youngest player to score a double hundred, and also became the fifth India to score a double ton after the likes of Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma, and Ishan Kishan.

There was an incident when Gill had a lapse in the field and that had got under the nerves of the then-fielding coach of India, R Sridhar. That mistake from the right-handed batter made Sridhar think of having a chat about the same with Ravi Shastri, who was the head coach of India at that time.

Your fielding should inspire the whole team -R Shridhar to Shubman Gill

“In Ahmedabad, during the last Test against England in March 2021, things came to a boil with Shubman. I contemplated having a word with Ravi about it but held my horses and took him out for lunch instead.” Sridhar wrote in his book. He also said that the younger generation come in with an attitude that they are already good while fielding.

“I told him, ‘You are considered the next big thing. People are looking at you from a leadership perspective. As a future leader, the one thing you should bring is inspiration. You should have a presence on the field and when you do something you must do it with intent. It is not just doing it for the sake of the team. Do it for yourself.’ Do it for your satisfaction, not because the captain wants you there. What you do there should be an inspiration for the whole team,” the former India fielding coach added.

The Punjab-born batter has become the fastest Indian to reach 1000 runs. He has been good in the field and is also considered a safe catcher. A few days earlier, former Pakistan chairman Ramiz Raja had compared Gill to Rohit Sharma and said that he has a lot of time to play his shots just like Rohit did and that he does not need to change anything in relation to his game at present.
