‘They were given a harsh ban’ – Fans react as Mitchell Johnson questions David Warner setting his retirement date for Tests against Pakistan

David Warner is set to retire from Test cricket after the series against Pakistan in 2024.

Former Australian pacer Mitchell Johnson questions David Warner setting his retirement date for Tests against Pakistan. Right at the start of the year, Warner had mentioned that he would retire from Test cricket after playing in the summer of 2024. Warner had mentioned that the series against Pakistan would be his last in Tests and would like to concentrate on limited-overs cricket after it.

Johnson said that Warner had no right to set a retirement date for himself. The former Australian cricketer questioned the decision of Warner, saying that the Southpaw and Australia are yet to recover from the ball-tampering saga that put the country and its cricket to shame in the sports fraternity. Johnson added that Warner had no business in setting his retirement date.

Johnson felt that Warner was in arrogance and disrespect for the country in setting the retirement date for himself. “Now the way he is going out is underpinned by more of the same arrogance and disrespect to our country,” said Johnson. The former left-arm pacer felt that Warner could not command his retirement, given his form with the bat in the last few years.

‘Why a struggling Test opener gets to nominate his retirement date?’ – Mitchell Johnson

Johnson accused Warner of considering himself bigger than the country. It is worth noting that Warner has not been that great as a batter in Test cricket in the last 20 months or so. Since the summer of 2021, Warner has not performed as well as one would have liked in the longest format of the game. Against South Africa, England, India, and other teams, Warner struggled to score runs.

Johnson hence questioned Warner behind setting his retirement date. “Why does a struggling Test opener get to nominate his retirement date? And why a player at the centre of one of the biggest scandals in Australian cricket history warrants a hero’s send-off?” questioned the former teammate of Warner. The comment of Johnson has received mixed response. While some felt that the Australian batter deserved to set his retirement, others felt he did not.

Here’s how the fans reacted to the statement of Johnson –
