The Indian team defeated South Africa by 7 wickets at the Newlands Cricket Stadium in Cape Town to level the series 1-1. This marks a terrific comeback for the side after being given a sound thrashing in the opening encounter in Johannesburg. This is the first time that India have won a Test match the venue and the game is now the shortest completed game in terms of balls bowled.

Earlier in the day, Aiden Markram smashed a magnificent century to lift South Africa to a score of 176, setting the visitors a target of 79. While 79 is not a daunting score usually, this particular pitch allowed the Proteas to at least believe that they had a chance. India played positive cricket in the chase, not allowing the bowlers to find their lengths. Eventually, the target was breached in just 12 overs with Shreyas Iyer hitting the winning runs.

Mohammed Siraj was adjudged the player-of-the-match for his magnificent figures of 6-15 in the first innings. He expressed happiness at being able to learn from the mistakes that he made in the previous game in Centurion. “I am glad that I was able to maintain a consistent line and length in this game”, he said. As far as the player-of-the-series was concerned, Dean Elgar and Jasprit Bumrah were declared the joint winners of that glory.

Speaking to the official broadcaster after the game, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma was ecstatic to see the team’s response to the defeat in Johannesburg. “It is a great feat. I am glad that we came back pretty well after the week that we had in Centurion. We applied ourselves well to get a lead which was very important,” he said.

The beer would have tasted better: Dean Elgar

Meanwhile, Rohit’s opposite number, Dean Elgar expressed disappointment at not being able to win the series and conceded that the first innings performance cost the side. ‘The beer would have tasted better had we won. The first innings killed us; they outskilled us in that first session,” he said. This also marks the end of Elgar’s illustrious Test career and as a mark of respect, the Indian side gifted him a jersey signed by all the members of the team.
