The ‘Men-in-Blue’ are locking horns in the second T20I against Sri Lanka at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune. With the senior players rested for the series, youngsters Shubman Gill and Shivam Mavi made their T20I debut in the first match. In the second match, it was the turn of Rahul Tripathi to get his maiden India cap.

The 31-year-old got into the side in place of Sanju Samson who has been ruled out of the team after suffering a knee injury while fielding in the first T20I. Tripathi received his cap from India’s batting coach, Vikram Rathour and became the 102nd player to represent India in the T20I format

Having scored close to 2000 runs in 74 Indian T20 League innings, Tripathi was desperately waiting for his maiden Indian cap for a long time. He received his first call-up to the India squad last summer when the team travelled to Ireland for two T20Is in June, under the leadership of Hardik Pandya.

In the Indian T20 League 2022, he scored 413 runs in 14 matches for the Hyderabad franchise and was an important member of the team even though they did not make it to the last four. Rahul scored three fifties with a best of 76 in the Indian T20 League 2022 season.

Arshdeep Singh had a forgettable first over on his return to Indian team

Other than Tripathi, Arshdeep Singh also returned to the team for the second T20I. The left-arm seamer was rested in the previous series against Bangladesh.

Indian captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and invited Sri Lanka to bat first. Sri Lankan openers Pathumm Nissanka and Kusal Mendis gave a blazing start to their team as they added 80 runs for the first wicket in 49 balls. Arshdeep Singh had a forgettable return to the team as he gave away 19 runs in his first over which included three consecutive no balls. Sri Lanka had reached 107/3 after 13 overs.
