‘The Phoenix deflates the Rocket’ – Twitter thrilled as Birmingham Phoenix register big win over Trent Rockets
The 15th Match of The Hundred 2022 competition kicked off between the Trent Rockets and Birmingham Phoenix on Monday. Birmingham Phoenix won the toss and chose to field. The opening combination of Alex Hales and Dawid Malan departed quickly without troubling the scorers. Kohler Cadmore, New Zealand import Colin Munro, Ian Cockbain and Samit Patel could not get going with the bat in hand.
They were all dismissed in quick succession. Trent Rockets were in absolute disarray and they needed something special to get back into the match. It came in the form of an unbeaten partnership between the skipper Gregory and the Australian all-rounder, Daniel Sams, who scored 35 and 55 runs off 22 and 25 balls respectively.
Gregory’s Innings consisted of 2 fours and 2 sixes. Daniel Sams hit 5 boundaries and 3 maximums in his innings which turned out to be a vital half-century that helped Trent Rockets put up a total of 145 on the board for the loss of 6 wickets.
Benny Howell, the Kiwi overseas player, was the pick of the bowlers as he picked up 3 wickets for 28 runs in his 20 balls bowled. Moeen Ali, Tom Helm, and South Africa wrist spinner Imran Tahir also contributed with the ball and picked up a wicket each in their respective spells.
In the second Innings, Will Smeed got out early as he was bowled by Luke Wood. Hammond looked good for his 20 off 16 balls but was out LBW to Luke Wood. Then, captain Moeen Ali and the big-hitting Liam Livingstone got together and ensured that there were no more hiccups in the chase. Moeen Ali scored a quick fire 52 off 28 balls, which consisted of 5 sixes and 3 boundaries.
Livingstone supported him well by scoring his half-century off 32 balls which included 1 four and 4 sixes. Mathew Wade came in at the end and finished things off in a quick knock of 14 off 10 balls, which contained 1 four and 1 six. In the end, the Birmingham Phoenix completed the chase in 86 balls and put out a dominating show.
Twitter was abuzz as usual and we will have a look at the reactions here-
