‘The King is back’ – Twitter rejoices as Virat Kohli scores his 45th ODI century against Sri Lanka at Guwahati
Virat Kohli scored a fluent unbeaten 113 off 87 balls with 12 fours and one six in the first ODI against Sri Lanka in Guwahati on January 10, Tuesday. This was his 73rd ton overall in international cricket and 45th ton in ODIs. He came in when India were at 143-1 at the fall of Shubman Gill. The former India captain was in his element and played all his strokes. His bat flow was great with some good strokes being played. He also hit a six over the mid-wicket region. This is one of his favourite shots and areas of the ground to access.
Kohli was not in the best of form in the ODI series against Bangladesh. After scoring 9 and 5 in the first and second ODI respectively. He stormed back to form in the third ODI with a superb 113 off 91 balls with 11 fours and two sixes which gave him his 72nd international ton overall. This was a strong comeback after he had struggled in the ODI format.
The fact that he played the shot was a sign that he was seeing the ball well. Kohli has battled a long patch of poor form that was broken in the 2022 Asia Cup edition in the United Arab Emirates. In the Asia Cup, he was the second-highest run-scorer of the tournament with 276 runs in five matches at an average of 92 and a strike rate of 147.59.
The right-handed batter scored his maiden T20I hundred against Afghanistan which was a sizzling 122 off 61 balls. He then carried his form into the 20-20 World Cup.
He scored 296 runs from six innings at an average of 98.66 and a strike rate of 136.40. His best knock was an unbeaten 82 against Pakistan which won India their 20-20 World opener from a come-from-behind position. After a grueling year in 2022, he got a well-deserved break as he did not play in the T20Is against Sri Lanka which allowed him to start afresh in the ODIs.
The fans were pleased to see the king in good form and back amongst the runs and they cannot wait for the Kohli of 2016 to show up again and enthral them with his magical stroke play. Twitter was abuzz, let us take a look at the reactions here-
