‘The greatest honour for me has been to play for India’ -Sania Mirza draws curtains on glorious career in Hyderabad

Saina Mirza has been a torchbearer of Indian Women’s Tennis throughout her electrifying career. Like everything, all good things must come to an end and so she bid adieu to her wonderful tennis career by playing exhibition games in Hyderabad which featured former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh, Rohan Bopana and her constant companion Bethanie Mettek Sands.

She made her swansong at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium which had signaled the start of something special that began almost 20 years back. The exhibition matches were seen by former Indian cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin and Kiren Rijiju, who is Union Law Minister.

Mirza played in both the mixed doubles exhibition matches and was victorious in both games. She was given a rousing reception by the crowd which had a large number of school children who had come to see the games.

“I am so excited to play my last match in front of you all,” Mirza said. “I have come to Hyderabad for Sania Mirza’s send-off, her farewell match. I am delighted to see so many people turning up for this. Sania Mirza is an inspiration not just for Indian tennis but for India sports too,” Rijiju said as quoted by NDTV Sports.

The Tennis ace hoped for many many Sanias to come out of the country. The hardcore tennis fans have felt very sad about Mirza saying goodbye to Tennis. Sania has said that she will continue to contribute to the tennis and sporting ecosystem in India and Telangana. When the match ended, she was facilitated by Telangana sports minister, V Srinivas Goud, and Rama Rao.

“The greatest honour for me has been to play for my country for 20 years. It is every athlete’s dream to represent their country at the highest level. I was able to do that,” Sania, who thanked everyone for supporting her in her journey Sania said. “These are very, very happy tears. I could not have asked for a better send-off,” The Tennis great said. She was thrilled to receive a lot of warmth while playing the match.
