‘The captaincy has been shambolic’- Fans lambast Rohit Sharma for poor captaincy against Australia
Rohit Sharma has come under the scanner for his poor captaincy once again. He did not lead the team well on the field in the second innings while India tried to defend a target of 208 in the first T20I against Australia. The bowling unit was totally outclassed because of a well-planned chase from Australia. Cameron Green performed well at the top of the order and scored a match-winning 61 from 30 balls, with 8 fours and 4 sixes.
Later on, valuable contributions from Steve Smith and Mathew Wade helped the team cross the line. Wade, in particular, played a game-changing knock of 45 runs in 21 balls, with 6 fours and 2 sixes. In all this, fans were seething at Rohit Sharma for his shoddy display of captaincy.
First, he did not deliver with the bat for the Men in Blue. He got out to Josh Hazelwood and the catch was taken by Nathan Elis as he departed for 11 runs in 9 balls, which contained a four and six.
On the field, it was seen that captaincy was clearly affecting him and that due to the extra burden of responsibility on his shoulders, he was clearly under the pump. He was showing way too many emotions on the field and his bowling changes were not up to the mark. Once again, Rohit Sharma assigned the 19th over to Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who had the right idea of bowling at the stumps, but he failed to execute it.
Another incident happened when Umesh Yadav got the wicket of Glenn Maxwell with the slower ball, but Dinesh Karthik, even though he caught the catch, appealed in a very mild fashion which did not please Rohit Sharma one bit. To make matters worse he went to Dinesh Karthik and shook him for not giving out a proper appeal.
When an lbw appeal against Steve Smith failed to produce a favourable result because it was handled lightly, Rohit Sharma became enraged at the wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik for not making a more assertive appeal. Rohit Sharma shouting at his players and showing too many emotions and volatility did not bode well with the fans.
