Following the attack, Belgian authorities launched an extensive manhunt to apprehend the suspect. The shooter, later identified as a 45-year-old Tunisian man named Abdesalem Al Guilani, was the prime focus of the manhunt. It was revealed that Guilani had sought asylum in Belgium in November 2019, but his application was rejected. He was known to the police in connection with people smuggling and illegal residence in the country. This information added to the urgency of capturing the suspect and resolving the security crisis.

The manhunt came to a dramatic conclusion as Belgian authorities located the suspect in the Schaerbeek area, near the city centre. A police operation in the Cage aux Ours district in Schaerbeek led to the fatal shooting of the suspect, who was armed at the time. The Belgian Federal Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that the suspected gunman had been killed.

The attack sent shockwaves not only through the footballing community but also across Europe. Sweden’s football team manager, Janne Andersson, expressed his disbelief, stating, “This feels completely unreal. What kind of world do we live in?” The team captain, Victor Lindelöf, could only say, “It’s terrible. I don’t know what to say.” The incident served as a grim reminder of the increasing security concerns in the region.

The attack in Belgium comes at a time of heightened security concerns in Europe, particularly in the wake of the conflict in Israel. France, for instance, has taken drastic measures by deploying an additional 7,000 troops onto its streets. This move followed the fatal stabbing of a teacher in a brutal attack that French President Emmanuel Macron condemned as “barbaric Islamic Terrorism.” These incidents underline the need for vigilance and preparedness in the face of potential security threats.

The attack on two Swedish nationals during a Euro 2024 qualifier soccer game in Belgium and the subsequent manhunt that led to the suspect’s death highlights the growing security challenges faced by European nations. It serves as a sobering reminder of the need for continued vigilance and proactive measures to address security threats in an increasingly uncertain world.
