The third Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy has been a great revelation for Team India. After winning the first two tests unopposed, India not only succumbed to the spin trio of Nathan Lyon, Todd Murphy, and Matthew Kuhnemann, they might lose this Test as Australia possess a lead of 47 runs with 6 wickets in hand at stumps on day 1.

Batting first at Holkar Stadium in Indore, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill gave a quick start as India raced to 27 for no loss at 5.5 overs. However, the wickets fell in quick succession before Virat Kohli and Srikar Bharat tried to stabilize the innings. Despite the effort, India could only score 109 before getting bundled out.

Though Australia lost early wicket in the form of Travis Head, Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne held the fort for the Kangaroos. Both stitched a 98-run partnership before getting dismissed. However, this would not have been a story if Ravindra Jadeja had not overstepped in the fourth over.

Ravindra Jadeja had dismissed Marnus Labuschagne as the right-handed batsman dragged a short pitched delivery to his stumps. However, the third umpire conveyed that the left-arm bowler had overstepped. This not only irked the on-field players but also the commentators.

Ravindra Jadeja’s no-ball errors are unacceptable: Sunil Gavaskar

“That’s unacceptable… He has a couple of man-of-the-match awards but for a spinner to bowl no-balls like this… This could cost India. Paras Mhambrey (bowling coach) has to sit with him and make him bowl from behind (the line). He has got off the mark now Marnus, he would have been out for a duck.”, Gavaskar said.

Similarly, former Indian national team coach Ravi Shastri also stated the no-ball can prove costly in a testing track like that of Indore. He said:

“These little errors could prove costly on a track like this”.

India will look forward to making amends on the second day of the third test. The Men in Blue will have to pick early wickets if they want to stay relevant in the game.
