The Indian T20 League got off to the perfect start as Gujarat beat Chennai by 5 wickets in a close opening game on Friday. Ahead of the game, MS Dhoni’s participation for the game was under a cloud. However. the Chennai CEO put all the rumours to rest going into the game. Dhoni, eventually, did play the first game against Gujarat.

However, during the game, an unfortunate incident happened for Chennai as Dhoni landed badly on his knee while diving to his right.

The ball went racing to fine leg after Rahul Tewatia clipped the ball off his pads. When he landed on his knee, he was seen grimacing in pain. This picture took social media by storm.

Chennai’s head coach, Stephen Fleming, recently, gave a big update on Dhoni’s fitness.

He knows his limitations-   Stephen Flemming on MS Dhoni

“He was always playing. Not sure where that story came from. He was nursing a sore knee throughout the month of pre-season, but today it was just cramps, it wasn’t the knee. He’s not going to be as quick and nimble as he was 15 years ago, but he is still a great leader of the side and, even with the bat, he is still going to play a part. He knows his limitations and he is a valuable player to have on the field. He is a legend,” Fleming said at the post-match press conference.

Chennai made 178-7 while batting first in the season opener. Ruturaj Gaikwad top-scored with the bat, amassing 92 off 50 balls with nine fours and four sixes. However, the other batters could not get going. MS Dhoni amassed 11 off 4 balls with one four and one six to give Chennai the perfect finish. When MS Dhoni batted in Ahmedabad, he made the crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium go berserk.

The Chennai skipper rolled back the years with his shots. There was a packed crowd in attendance to see the first game of the Indian T20 League 2023. Rashid Khan and Tewatia switched the gears at the right time and won the match for Gujarat. The Hardik Pandya led side have started their title defence well.
