South African men’s hockey team coach Iain Shippey shares an interesting story involving Kwan Browne
South African men’s hockey team’s coach has made a heartfelt post for Kwan Browne. Iain Shippey took it to Instagram to share an interesting story that involved England’s assistant coach Kwan Browne. Shippey revealed that the men’s team wanted a venue to stay in two weeks before the Birmingham event.
He added that the South African team did not have a venue for training and was clueless about the same. Shippey added that he contacted Browne on one of the player’s suggestions and it worked out well for them. The South African coach added that Browne moved heaven and earth to get a base at Mill Hill School.
In his Instagram post, Shippey further revealed that Browne did not charge him a single penny for the stay. He revealed that only after the warm incident, did he find out that Kwan Browne was England’s assistant coach.
“Connections: True story on the eve of the Bronze medal match between England and SA, this is one of the background stories that should be told before anyone stands on a podium. Two weeks before the Commonwealth Games, the SA Men’s Hockey team had not confirmed a venue for their training camp in the UK. Unbeknown to the team, the management held a crisis meeting as we endeavoured to resolve this dilemma. We had no sponsor and urgently needed a solution,” Shippey started the post.
He added that it was almost 11:59 in the night and he had no other choice than to contact the English assistant coach. “Kwan moved heaven and earth for us and asked Mill Hill School, where he is Director of Hockey if they could host us. He came back with the message. ‘You can stay for free, please can you pay the cost price of the food’ The kindness of this gesture left us speechless,” Shippey continued.
“Only then did we discover that Kwan was also the assistant coach of England. He went the extra mile for the team who would contend against his England for the Bronze medal. These are the stories that need to be told. Tomorrow will be agony for one of the teams and ecstasy for the other. Mill Hill School and Kwan Browne thanks for keeping us in the race!” Shippey concluded.
