On that occasion, the toss was in favor of South Africa, but their decision to bat first backfired spectacularly on them. What followed was a masterclass in fast bowling by the Indian duo of Arshdeep Singh and Avesh Khan. They tore through the Proteas lineup, sharing a staggering 9 wickets between them. The pitch, was initially expected to be in favor of the spinners, turned out to be a paradise for the pacers. Arshdeep, in particular, was on fire, claiming his maiden ODI five-wicket haul with some stunning swing bowling. Avesh Khan wasn’t far behind, picking up 4 wickets with his accurate seam bowling.

Chasing a paltry target of 117, India just needed 16.4 overs to get the job done. Debutant Sai Sudharsan and Shreyas Iyer starred with fluent half-centuries, making the light work of the chase. Sudharsan, in particular, was impressed with his elegant strokeplay, announcing himself on the international stage in style.

India’s comprehensive victory in the first ODI was a dominant display of their bowling prowess. The pace attack, in particular, was clinical, dismantling the South African batting order with sheer pace and swing. With the series, India will aim to repeat their performance in the second ODI at Gqeberha and seal the series. Meanwhile the Proteas, a proud cricketing nation, will be desperate to turn things around and level the series.
