The recent exclusion of Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer from the Indian Cricket Board’s annual central contracts caused a stir in the cricketing world. Both players are considered talented prospects with significant international experience, particularly in white-ball formats. However, their decision to ignore domestic tournaments like the Ranji Trophy resulted in them being dropped from the prestigious list.

The Board, the governing body of cricket in India, has consistently emphasized the importance of domestic cricket as a breeding ground for future stars. The Ranji Trophy, specifically, holds a significant place as a test of a player’s skill and temperament under pressure. By neglecting domestic matches, Kishan and Iyer sent a message that some perceived as conflicting with the Board’s vision for player development.

This move by the body served as a strong message to other aspiring players, highlighting the importance of dedicating time to domestic cricket. It also signifies the organization’s commitment to upholding the traditional pathway to national selection.

“Jay Shah, Roger Binny and the selectors need to speak to him”- Sourav Ganguly

Sourav Ganguly, the former Board president and a legendary Indian captain, weighed in on the matter, expressing disappointment in Kishan and Iyer’s decision. He emphasized the surprising nature of their choice, stating that historically, most players actively participate in the Ranji Trophy when not involved in international cricket. He further endorsed the body’s decision, suggesting it was taken to address the issue appropriately.

“I think this is the first time that someone has not played or ignored red-ball domestic cricket. Otherwise, all of them have played Ranji Trophy when they were free. I am sure the Board will take proper action,” said Ganguly.

With regard to Kishan, Ganguly believes that the high-up from the board must speak to the youngster and guide him. “For someone like Ishan Kishan, secretary Jay Shah, president Roger Binny and the selectors need to speak to him. All this while he has played Ranji and then played white-ball cricket. Has it made him a poorer player? It hasn’t,” the 51-year-old said.
