Steve Smith has been a wonderful batter for Australia in Test Cricket. The right-handed batter in 95 matches has scored 8744 runs at an average of 59.89 and a strike rate of 54.25. He has scored 30 hundreds and 27 fifties and also four double hundreds. The right-hander has done very well as captain when he has led Australia in the past as well.
The Australian star dropped a big bombshell ahead of the fourth Test at Ahmedabad and said that the fixture could be his last on Indian soil. Smith will lead Australia for the second time. The 33-year-old led Australia in the Indore Test and The Kangaroos won the match by nine wickets. Smith scored three hundreds the last time he played in India in 2017.
“I probably can’t see myself coming back really, if I’m being realistic,” Smith said.”But we’ll wait and see, take it day by day, four years is a long time. “I’ll enjoy this one, hopefully it’s a great crowd and we can entertain them and ideally finish the series really well.” Smith said these as quoted by Perth now.
Apart from this, the two-time World Cup winner was quick to say that Australia should be focusing on the big picture. Australia will play the ODI World Cup in India which is slated to take place in October- November. The ODI World Cup will be held for the first time in India since 2011.
“You want your best players available in particular for the big tournaments or big series. “It’s just about going from series to series and seeing where everyone is at mentally and physically and trying to put the best team on the park as much as possible.” Australia last won an ODI World Cup in 2007 where they defeated Sri Lanka in the West Indies.
Australia won the 20-20 World Cup in 2021 in the United Arab Emirates. It was their first title in the shortest format. If the Test at Ahmedabad is Smith’s last then it will be curtains on a wonderful Test career. Let us take a look at the reactions on Twitter-

This is where you become a winner or a loser. But if you like playing against us, you will get a lot of love from this country as a player. That's what Steve Smith gets. Hope to you'll be back to India like 2017 to torment his spinners.#SteveSmith #BGT

It's not happening. U know it

He can easily do a James Anderson and play in his 40s well. For that to happen he needs to give up white ball cricket completely in the next 2 years.

definitely he will if he want to…. I mean they can't produce bunch of test batsman better dn Smith in span of four years but Australian players longevity short compare to Asian players and most of those guys hardly play cricket after 35-36 https://t.co/hLnz1hhIgI

Provided he quit ODI cricket after this WC, there is no doubt he can comeback to India again for red ball cricket but Aussies doesn't like hanging over the sell out date unlike Asian so it's highly likely tomorrow is his last test in India. #indvaus
