‘Shubman Gill ne sab ka dil jeet liya’ – Twitter booming as Shubman Gill floors New Zealand with maiden double ton
Shubman Gill scored a maiden double hundred in ODI Cricket against New Zealand in the first ODI in Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium against New Zealand. He scored 208 off 149 balls with 19 fours and nine sixes. He became the youngest player to score a double hundred in an ODI at 23 years and 132 days. This is his third hundred in ODIs.
In this innings, he provided a fine balance between playing the ball along the ground and also playing the lofted shots. He also used the straight boundaries to good effect and scored many fours in that area. The straight boundaries are believed to be the safest areas to score runs on a cricket ground and Gill used it to good effect. He has held the innings together for India with his double hundred. He batted at a strike rate of 140 through the innings.
After he scored his hundred, he switched gears and hit some big sixes against the New Zealand bowlers. He reached his double hundred with a six. He put the pressure back on the New Zealand bowlers with his big hitting. Gill played a very matured knock in the circumstances of the game after the fall of Rohit Sharma who scored 34 off 38 balls with four fours and two sixes. Virat Kohli fell soon after. Through this innings he became the second fastest to score a thousand runs in ODIs.
Gill made his maiden ODI Hundred in Harare against Zimbabwe
Kohli also perished early in the piece off the bowling of Mitchell Santner. He played off the back foot to a ball where he should have been on the front foot. The ball turned a little bit and dislodged his off stump. From there on Gill forged a very good combination with Suryakumar Yadav as Suryakumar provided Gill good support and scored a vital 31 off 26 balls with four fours before he perished to Daryl Mitchell.
Gill recently scored his second ODI Hundred at Thiruvananthapuram against Sri Lanka. The Punjab-born batter is proving to be a beast in the ODI format. He has repaid the faith of the management for backing him continuously at the top of the order. He had scored his debut hundred in ODIs at Harare against Zimbabwe.
The right-handed batter burst onto the scene in the 2018 U19 World Cup. He also had a century against Pakistan in that tournament. He racked up the runs and was instrumental in helping India get to the final against Australia. India won the final against Australia. That Under 19 Team included some stars such as Prithvi Shaw, Shivam Mavi, Kamlesh Nagarkoti and Ishan Porel who have made rapid strides since then. Let us take look at the reactions on Twitter-
