India and Bangladesh are locking horns in the first Test of the three-match series at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chattogram. Indian captain KL Rahul won the toss and elected to bat first. The opening duo of captain Rahul and Shubman Gill gave a decent start to their side adding 41 runs for the first wicket. However, the duo couldn’t continue their stand as left-arm spinner Taijul Islam gave Bangladesh their first breakthrough by dismissing Gill on 20.

Rahul also followed him quickly and chopped a delivery by Khaled Ahmed back onto his stumps as India lost their second wicket on the score of 45. Bangladesh gave another big blow to India as Virat Kohli returned to the pavilion for just 1 leaving India at 48/3 in the first session. Seeing the left-arm spinner Islam dominating the Indian batters, the team management sent left-handed Rishabh Pant ahead of Shreyas Iyer to negate Islam’s threat.

Pant played a counter-attacking knock and added 64 runs for the fourth wicket with Cheteshwar Pujara. Pant scored 46 off 45 balls smashing six fours and two sixes in his innings. He was dismissed by Mehidy Hasan Miraz after lunch which brought Shreyas Iyer to the crease.

Shreyas Iyer added 149 runs for the fifth wicket with Pujara

Iyer took his time early on and negated the lethal spin attack of Bangladesh. After setting his eye in, he began playing his shots and got involved in a crucial fifth wicket stand with Pujara which took India out of trouble. Pujara and Iyer stitched a 149-run partnership which helped India cross the 250-run mark at the end of the day’s play.

Iyer showed great composure at the crease and reached his half-century post-tea with a boundary against Shakib-al-Hasan. The Mumbai batter even had luck on his side as he was dropped on deep mid-wicket on 67 by Ebadot Hossain who failed a grab a straightforward chance. He was further given another life on the bowling of Hossain as he got bowled but the bails didn’t fall off.

The 28-year-old remained unbeaten at the crease on 82 as India finished Day 1 on the score of 278/6. Iyer garnered praise for his classy innings on social media. Here’s how Twitter reacted to Iyer’s knock:
