‘Shafali mein Sehwag ka bhooth aa gaya’ – Fans gobsmacked as Shafali Verma’s unbelievable knock helps Delhi register dominating 10-wicket win over Gujarat
The 9th match of the Women’s Premier League took place at the DY Patil Stadium between Delhi and Gujarat. The coin fell in favour of Gujarat and they elected to bat first. It was not the best of starts for Gujarat as Sabbihineni Meghna got out for a two-ball duck to Marizanne Kapp.
Shortly after, Laura Wolvaardt got out to Kapp after scoring 1 off 2 balls. Gujarat then lost Ashleigh Gardner and the side was tottering at 9-3. It was a wonderful opening bowling spell from Kapp which had put Gujarat on the mat.
Harleen Deol scored a brisk 20 off 14 balls with four fours but was also got out to the South African. The only other notable contributions with the bat for Gujarat came from Georgia Wareham, who scored 22 off 25 balls with two fours.
Marizanne was the wrecker in chief for Delhi as she picked up 5-15 in her four overs
Kim Garth made an unbeaten 32 off 37 balls with three fours. However, that didn’t prove enough as Gujarat got to only 105-9 in their 20 overs. For Delhi, Kapp picked up 5-15 in her four overs which broke the back of her opponents. Shikha Pandey picked up 3-26 in her four overs. Radha Yadav picked up 1-19 in her four overs.
Delhi bowled like a well-oiled unit and put Gujarat under pressure right through their innings. In the second innings, Shafali Verma took off like Virender Sehwag. She scored an unbeaten 76 off just 28 balls with 19 fours and five sixes. Due to this fast-paced innings, Delhi got off to a strong start and scored 57-0 in the first four overs in the run chase. Meg Lanning was very happy to play second fiddle as she made 17 off 14 balls with two fours.
Gujarat did not know what hit them as they have failed as unit in this game. It was an absolute annihilation from Delhi, in the end, as they chased down a 107-run target in just 7.1 overs.
