Pakistan’s performance in the ODI World Cup was undoubtedly disappointing, falling short of expectations and failing to live up to their potential. Out of their nine matches, they managed to secure only four victories, a stark contrast to their form leading into the tournament. The fact that three of their wins came against sides which had a poor run themselves, tells the story. As such, they failed to qualify for the semi-finals for the third consecutive time which has been a tough pill to swallow for their fans.

A huge reason behind Pakistan’s dismal performance in this edition of the World Cup was the form or lack thereof of Shadab Khan. Despite entering the tournament with underwhelming numbers, he was entrusted with the vice-captaincy and a crucial role in the team’s bowling attack.

However, Shadab failed to justify the management’s faith, delivering far below expectations. Throughout the tournament, Shadab struggled to find his rhythm and rhythm, consistently conceding runs and failing to provide breakthroughs. His lack of impact was particularly evident against stronger opponents, where his bowling lacked bite and accuracy.

“I have let myself down, I didn’t live up to my potential as a bowler which has impacted the team’s performance” – Shadab Khan

The 25-year-old played six games in the quadrennial event, only managing to pick up 2 wickets. His average stands at a disappointing 118.5 and his economy rate of 6.24 didn’t help the team’s cause either. Shadab was ineffective on pitches that were meant to suit him and that hurt the 1992 champions big time. The situation was so bad that he was even dropped in the middle of the tournament.

In the aftermath of Pakistan’s disappointing loss to England in their final World Cup match, Shadab Khan, in a conversation with reporters, acknowledged that his underwhelming performance had significantly impacted the team’s overall standing in the tournament. “I have let myself down, I didn’t live up to my potential as a bowler which has impacted the team’s performance. You always try to win a tournament, but this could not happen. We are out of the semifinals. Coaches, players, support staff everyone is disappointed”, he was quoted as saying.

Amidst the fervent calls for a complete overhaul of the Pakistan cricket team following their disappointing World Cup campaign, Shadab advocated for a more nuanced approach to addressing the team’s shortcomings. “This represents a cultural difference. When we emerge victorious, it is attributed solely to the captain’s triumph. But in times of defeat, the responsibility for the loss falls squarely on the captain’s shoulders. This should change”, he said.
