‘Sevilla will now be on Cloud 9’ -Fans react as Sevilla are crowed Champions of Europe as they beat Roma 4-1 on penalties

Sevilla tasted victory in the Europa League on Wednesday as they trumped Roma 4-1 on penalties in an electric match. The victory in Budapest ended a wonderful campaign for the club. This victory has kept their rousing record of seven out of seven finals intact. In a high-octane game of football, the score was 1-1 apiece at the end of the extra time, where no team gave an inch to the other to get a foot into the door in the final.

The 1-1 stalemate happened at an extra time after Paulo Dybala’s opening goal did not give early footing as an own goal from Roma defender Gianluca Mancini made things equal. Tempers were hot as a gripping match was in the offing. Fans from all over the world would have enjoyed a hard-fought night of football. When it was time for the penalty shootout, Sevilla found their hero in goalkeeper Yassine Bounou whose two saves were like gold dust on the night of the final.

Gonzalo Montiel, who scored the decisive penalty in the 2022 World Cup final, whacked a decisive spot-kick after Mancini and Roger Ibanez had failed to convert for Roma. The win is a remarkable achievement for 62-year-old Jose Luis Mendilibar,  the man who was responsible for the win. He only took over the reins at Sevilla in March and is now celebrating his first major trophy. It has been outstanding work from him behind the scenes as he had arrived at short notice on this Sevilla side.

“We are going to enjoy this because it has cost a lot and right now I don’t know if I will renew or not and I don’t care,” The man from Spain said. He further sounded uncertain of being with the club come next season. The manager has done his job by making the club avoid relegation and also he has turned the club into Champions of Europe.

“When I arrived I told the players that they were very good but that they were not mentally in the right place and that was my job,” he said. “They have shown me in the end that they are very good.” On the other hand, it was not the best of times for Roma manager Jose Mourinho who had been on the losing side for the first time come a European final.
