1996 ODI World winners, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan locked horns at the Gahunje Stadium, Pune. Ahead of this game, the former champions humbled the defending champions, England by eight wickets and 24.2 overs to spare. On the other hand, the Afghans registered history against their immediate neighbors, Pakistan. In this game, Afghanistan won the toss and chose to bowl first.

They had a great start as Fazalhaq Farooqi trapped Dimuth Karunaratne (15). After losing the first wicket for 22 runs, the likes of skipper Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka stitched a partnership of 62 runs. However, both batters played slowly with the former once again not being able to recreate the same magic he did against South Africa and Pakistan. The right-hander managed only 50-ball 39.

None of the batters managed to even get past the 50-run mark. In the end, they were bowled out for 241 runs, a below-par total at the venue. For the Blue Brigade, Afghanistan, while Fazalhaq took four wickets, Mujeeb Ur Rehman took two. On the other hand, Azmatullah Omarzai and Rashid Khan took one wicket each.
