Chennai and Gujarat will play the first game in the Indian T20 League. Chennai last won a title in 2021, while Gujarat won the league in 2022 in their debut season. The Indian players will not have time to rest after the tournament as they play the Test Championship after the Indian T20 League. In addition, this year is also an ODI World Cup year. Rohit Sharma had stressed workload management before the start of the tournament.

However, on ESPN Cricinfo, Sanjay Manjrekar disagreed with Rohit on that statement. Manjrekar was quizzed whether Hardik Pandya might need to keep a check on his bowling workload keeping in mind the 50-over World Cup, that will be held this year. The former India star made an interesting observation.

The owners spend a lot of money on the players in the Indian T20 League- Sanjay Manjrekar

“Indian T20 League’s success is largely dependent on players’ fitness, and that everyone plays to their best potential. Fans love this tournament, it’s quite popular, so, I’m not a fan of players resting during the Indian T20 League so that they can play the World Cup. Because see, the players can get injured even during international matches. Anything can happen,” Manjrekar said.

“There should be no restrictions on players in Indian T20 League. Owners spend money on them and they should have the freedom to use a player as much as they want. Indian T20 League should be given a special status in that regard,” Manjrekar added. A lot of Indian players are out of the Indian T20 League due to injuries. This includes the likes of Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, Shreyas Iyer, Prasidh Krishna and Mukesh Choudhary.

Rohit had said the onus of workload management rests with the franchise. He added that the players will take a call on their bodies. Rohit emphasised that the players are adults and if the workload is getting too much, then they can also take a break. The India skipper said that he is doubtful of the same happening in the tournament. The Indian T20 League will be held in 12 venues this edition.
