Hanuma Vihari has been out of the reckoning in the Indian Test Team for some time now. He last made everyone take notice due to his heroic innings at the Sydney Test in 2021 where he battled a back injury and steered India to a famous draw at the Sydney Cricket Ground. India won the next Test at Brisbane and took the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2-1.

He did the same in the quarterfinals of the Ranji Trophy against Madhya Pradesh. The Andhra captain walked out to bat despite a fractured wrist and batted left-handed against Madhya Pradesh. He had retired hurt on Day 1 after being struck by Avesh Khan with a bouncer. At that point, he was batting on 16 off 37 balls.

An official from the team said with a note of conformity that he had suffered a fracture on his left wrist and he has been advised five to six weeks of rest. He, however, said that he would be more than willing to bat if his team needed it.

He had similar batted against Australia at Sydney braving an injury and helping India draw the match

He came again on Day 2 and resumed batting during the morning session with the Andhra Team’s total at 353-9. At the time of writing, he is batting on 20 off 47 balls, with four fours. The videos of him batting left-handed have been doing the rounds on social media.

In the Sydney Test in 2021 mentioned above, Ravichandran Ashwin and Vihari had injuries and could not run properly between wickets. Yet, they batted through the last day in that Test amid a hostile bowling spell from the Australians and earned a hard-fought draw for India in that series. He could have not played in the second innings but he put his career on the line for the team and made sure he put India in a great position going into Brisbane.

He, as a player. had been put in the classical mould as he could bat with grit and determination with a strong defence to his aid. He was in the mould of a Cheteshwar Pujara or Rahul Dravid and could also bowl some handy off-spinners in a Test batting lineup where the India Test top order did not bowl.
