Cricket South Africa is getting set to launch its new franchise-based T20 league. The board has a lot of hopes resting on this new league as their previous ventures have already failed. CSAs first T20 League was Ram Slam and the second one was Mzansi Super League. Needless to say, both failed spectacularly. Now, the league which is named SA20 is about to begin its journey with its inaugural player auction.

Taking a leaf from the Indian T20 League, CSA decided to conduct a player auction for the league as opposed to player drafting practiced in other leagues. Notably, the teams which were selected for the tournament are owned by different owners from Indian T20 League teams. So without further ado, let’s have a look at the details related to the player auction.

Teams

MI Cape Town, Durban Super Giants, Johannesburg Super Kings, Paarl Royals, Pretoria Capitals, and Sunrisers Eastern Cape

Registered Players

There are 533 players listed in the auction. A total of 17 players can be signed in every squad. However, through a pre-auction direct-acquisition method, the six teams have already signed on a total of 22 players from a pool of 30. They had the option to choose up to five players prior to the auction. Some of them simply selected two, while others picked all five. Those five players are limited to a maximum of three overseas (non-South African) players, one international player from South Africa, and one uncapped South African cricketer. Of the 533, 248 players will be South Africans.

Signed Players

MI Cape Town- Kagiso Rabada, Dewald Brevis, Rashid Khan, Liam Livingstone, Sam Curran

Durban Super Giants- Quinton de Kock, Prenelan Subrayen, Jason Holder, Kyle Mayers, Reece Topley

Johannesburg Super Kings- Faf du Plessis, Gerald Coetzee, Moeen Ali, Maheesh Theekshana, Romario Shepherd

Purses and Squad Size

Each side is allowed to sign up a maximum of ten South African cricketers and seven overseas players, with their total purse of USD 2 million. The teams do not have a full purse as they have already signed select players in the direct acquisition. For every game, a team can deploy only four overseas players in their playing combination. The rest seven players must be South Africans.

Base Price Bracket

The highest category in the base price is RAND 1,750,000 (USD 100,000 approximately), followed by RAND 1,700,000 (USD 97,000 approximately), and RAND 850,000 (USD 48,000 approximately) which are the second and third categories respectively. A total of 52 cricketers, including well-known figures from South Africa like Dean Elgar, Temba Bavuma, and Tabraiz Shamsi, have the lowest of the top-three base prices, i.e., RAND 850,000

Of the 248 South Africans participating in the auction, 11 have set themselves the highest base price of RAND 1,750,000, including overseas players Jayden Seales and Odean Smith from the West Indies. Eoin Morgan, Adil Rashid, Jason Roy, Tymal Mills, David Willey, Jimmy Neesham, and Chamika Karunaratne have themselves under the second category of RAND 1,700,000.
