The echoes of the ODI World Cup still linger, the cricketing world has already set its sights on the next major event, the T20 World Cup, scheduled for June 2024 in the United States and West Indies. With just a few months remaining, several teams have already begun their preparations, eager to claim the coveted title.

South Africa will kick off their journey to the T20 World Cup with a three-match home series against India, starting this Sunday, December 10th. This series will serve as a crucial preparation phase for both teams as they look to build momentum towards the global T20 tournament.

The Proteas recently named a 16-player squad for their upcoming T20I series against India, which is expected to be the foundation of their World Cup team. However, with a grueling few months of cricket behind them, some players have been rested for the series, allowing for experimentation and the integration of new faces. Aiden Markram, who has been appointed T20I captain in March 2023, will lead the side. Nandre Burger, Ottniel Baartman, and Matthew Breetzke, promising newcomers, will get their chance to impress the selectors. Meanwhile, Gerald Coetzee and Lungi Ngidi will only be available for the first two matches before being rested for the upcoming Test series against the same opponent.

South Africa T20 squad: Aiden Markram (c), Ottniel Baartman, Matthew Breetzke, Nandre Burger, Gerald Coetzee (1st and 2ndT20Is), Donovan Ferreira, Reeza Hendricks, Marco Jansen (1st and 2nd T20Is), Heinrich Klaasen, Keshav Maharaj, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi (1st and 2nd T20Is), Andile Phehlukwayo, Tabraiz Shamsi, Tristan Stubbs, and Lizaad Williams.

Rossouw harbours hope for a comeback

South Africa’s swashbuckling left-hander Rilee Rossouw, 34, is harboring ambitions of a return to the national side for the upcoming T20 World Cup. While his last appearance in Proteas colors dates back to a T20I series against West Indies in March, his recent exclusion from the upcoming series against India doesn’t dampen his spirit. Rossouw’s established credentials and extensive experience as a T20 globetrotter make him a strong contender for a World Cup berth. He boasts a proven track record in the format, boasting a career strike rate of 159.79 and a healthy average of 34.86 in T20Is.

“I’ve been in touch with the coach and I’m still in his ideas, whether I play in the leagues or not. So, without thinking much I just want to perform and do well wherever and whatever the changes,” Rossouw recently said.

The South African coach, Rob Walter had also recently mentioned that players like Rossouw and even Faf du Plessis, still had a chance to return to the national side. “There are guys – let me throw it out there just to create some media hype – like Faf and Rilee as well as Quinny that could well be considered for a T20 World Cup and then also the SA20 that happens next year – 80 percent of the side picks itself but there is definitely a space for other guys to get themselves into the conversation,” Walter said in an interaction.
