Asia Cup 2023 has been the topic of contention ever since it was announced Pakistan will host the event. The Indian team refused to tour Pakistan and insisted on a venue change. The drama continued when the Indian board had spoken of pulling out of the event. Pakistan came back with the threat of pulling out of the World Cup 2023 tournament if India pulled out of the Asia Cup. There were talks of the tournament being held in UAE, but that was eventually dismissed.

The compromise formula finally saw Sri Lanka host the majority of the tournament. Pakistan is hosting a few games as Sri Lanka hosts every other match including all of India’s games. Najam Sethi has put out a tweet after the India-Pakistan encounter was washed out due to rain on Saturday.

Najam Sethi’s tweets about his frustration after rain plays spoilsport –

Former chief of Pakistani cricket Najam Sethi found himself in the news. Najam Sethi took to Twitter and wrote, “How disappointing! Rain mars the greatest contest in cricket. But this was forecast. As PCB chair, I urged the ACC to play in UAE but poor excuses were made to accommodate Sri Lanka”

The former chief of Pakistan cricket did not stop there and further wrote “Too hot in Dubai they said. But it was hot when the Asia Cup was played there last time in September 2022 or when the IPL was played there in April 2014 and September 2020. Politics over sport. Unforgivable”

India and Pakistan played on Saturday at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. The game saw both teams get a point after rain had marred the 2nd half of the game. India was bowled out for 266 while Pakistan did not get a chance to bat.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh won their 1st game of the tournament on Sunday by beating Afghanistan. Batting first Bangladesh scored 334/5 from their fifty overs. Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s career-best 112 off 119 balls with 7 fours and 3 sixes. Nazmul Shanto scored 104 before he was run out.

Chasing 335 to win, Afghanistan were all out for 245 to lose the game by 89 runs. Ibrahim Zadran top scored 75 and captain Shahidi scored 51. Taskin Ahmed was the lead wicket-taker for Bangladesh with 4/44.
