Shubman Gill has been in the form of his life in IPL 2023. The Gujarat Titans opener has racked up 851 runs in 16 matches at an average of 60.78 and at a strike rate of 156.43. He has scored four half-centuries and three centuries. Gill has shown that he has the class and the longevity to thrive at the international level and also in the IPL. The switch from Kolkata Knight Riders to GT has worked wonders for him.

Gill showed what form he was in when he smashed his third century in IPL 2023 against MI. It was an innings of the highest class and each shot was better than the last one.  Got to give credit to Shubman, he is in great form and I hope he continues that,” Rohit said. The MI skipper broke into a wry smile. Ian Bishop who was hosting the post-match presentation also broke into a chuckle as well.

We needed someone like Shubman Gill to bat till the end- Rohit Sharma on Mumbai Indians 62-run loss to Gujarat Titans

Gill played a regal and rapid knock of 129 off 60 balls. The innings was studded with fours and sixes. It contained seven fours and 10 sixes. Gill is also the youngest Indian to score a double century for India. He also has a hundred in T20 cricket and recently hit his second Test match hundred against Australia which was also at the Narendra Modi Stadium at Ahmedabad.

“Gill was superb. We needed someone to bat till the end like Gill. It was a good pitch, one side was small, if we had taken the match deep then anything could have happened,” Rohit said when he was asked about the match against GT. MI’s bowlers did not step up when it came to the big game. It was an insipid bowling performance from the Paltan. Chris Jordan had yet another bad day at the office with his four overs costing him 56 runs.

GT with all the depth in their bowling pushed MI into a corner. There were sizable contributions from Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav. But MI’s batting did not fire as a unit. This gave them lesser chances of chasing down a mammoth target of 234 in the second innings. In the end, GT recorded a comfortable win of 62 runs.
