Roger Federer pens down a heartfelt tribute to Serena Williams after her shocking exit from the US Open
The 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams’ wanted to end her longstanding career on a great note but it all came crashing down on Friday when the Tennis icon exited out of the US Open because she lost to Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic.
The seasoned campaigner was defeated by the Australian 7-5,6-7, (4-7) (6-1) in a grueling match that lasted for over 3 hours. Serena Willams’ name will forever be etched in the memories of all tennis fans. Serena had paired up with Venus Williams in the US Open doubles.
That also ended on a sad note for the sisters as they took no further part in the tournament after having not gone through the first round itself. Right after Serena Williams bid adieu to the fans at Aurthur Ashe, Roger Federer showered praises on her and sent her a heart-warming message. The official ATP social media account shared a video featuring the Tennis great Roger Federer with a special message for Serena Williams.
“I know it’s probably with mixed feelings you are leaving the wonderful sports that has given you everything and more. I wish you all the best with your family. I recall ’99’ US Open when you played Martina Hingis, I stayed up late to watch you battle it out as that was the beginning to your incredible career that you have had ever since,” said Federer. The 20 times Grand Slam winner further congratulated Serena on her amazing career and conveyed her best wishes for the future.
