Just a few days ago, Riot Games laid off over 500 employees from its various divisions. The reason provided was downsizing on some of the projects that were not paying off.

As per reports, over 30 employees in the layoffs were from the broadcasting division. These included engineers, producers, and managers who handled some of the most complex work.

This is turning out to be a horrible situation for both the employees and the League of Legends esports. The start was the absolute best, however, the path forward remains uncertain.

The remaining team forced to do Crunch

Richard Lewis, a popular reporter, revealed that people were still laid off despite being told “not to worry”. Since the LEC is in full swing, the remaining team were left with more work to “keep the show running”.

As per an anonymous employee, people working at Riot have multiple jobs. “The working hours are insane, but if you don’t do it, they will hire someone else who will,” they added.

Further adding, “Everyone wants to work for Riot because it looks good on your employment record, so you have to be irreplaceable. Even then, that hasn’t worked because I’ve seen irreplaceable people be fired”.

Even before the lay-off, the team handling LEC was understaffed. People were working at different esports departments, including Valorant Esports. People were brought in from different departments as per needs.

Now, with even more layoffs, the team is being forced to do crunch work. It remains to be seen what Riot will do regarding the upcoming LEC events. These issues will not only affect the LEC but also other esports events for Riot titles.
