While the return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to the T20I setup generated significant buzz, another decision, or rather non-decision, also piqued interest: the absence of Ishan Kishan. With another World Cup looming, Kishan’s exclusion remains an intriguing discussion amidst the excitement of Kohli and Sharma’s comeback.

Having been a part of India’s T20 plans, Ishan Kishan was not picked for the Afghanistan T20Is, which is India’s final assignment before the T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA. The selectors instead picked Sanju Samson and Jitesh Sharma, with the former bot being a part of the two rubbers against Australia and South Africa.

Ahead of the Test series against South Africa, Kishan had sought permission from the Indian Cricket Board to withdraw from the series on account of mental fatigue. “Ishan wasn’t happy that he was travelling without much game time. He is on a break right now and is vacationing. In any case, selectors are in all likelihood looking beyond Kishan. It will be interesting if he is picked for the England Test series.,” news agency PTI quoted a board source as saying.

The board unhappy with Kishan

A report by Anandbazaar Patrika claims that the board was displeased with his participation in a social gathering in Dubai after withdrawing from the Test squad. Another report claims the BCCI was unhappy about his appearance on a television show without prior permission.

Only time will tell whether the reports are true or if Kishan is still on a break which has led to his non-selection. Kishan will soon be seen in the Indian Premier League in which he will don the Blue and Gold colours of the five-time champions, Mumbai Indians. Kishan is all set to open the batting with Rohit Sharma. Kishan had a good run last season as he scored 454 runs at a healthy strike rate of close to 150. Mumbai Indians will hope that he does a similar job this season as they chase their sixth IPL title.
