Reece Topley drops out of The Hundred to be fully prepared for 20-20 World Cup 2022
The Hundred has been a great competition so far offering some amazing cricketing action to the crowd. But, a lot of premier England players have been plagued by injuries in the competition which include Chris Jordan and Tymal Mills. The latest addition to the list is Reece Topley, the Left Arm medium pacer who has pulled out of The Hundred to be at his best for the upcoming 20-20 World Cup in Australia later this year.
Reece Topley has been in prime form in summer for the English white-ball side, picking up 17 wickets in 10 matches against India and South Africa. He said the following in a statement that over the last few weeks, he had been “feeling the effects of a busy summer more and more”
“Taking a short break feels like a sensible precaution to avoid injury and the risk of a longer lay-off. Nonetheless, I am disappointed not to be contributing as the team enters a crucial period in the competition,” ESPNCricinfo quoted Topley as saying in a statement issued by his team Oval Invincibles.
Tom Moody who is the man in charge of the Oval Invincibles said that he was disappointed to lose a player of Topley’s class at this stage of the tournament but the team “respects his decision”. The Oval Invincibles are expected to sign a replacement shortly.
The left-arm quick has gotten five wickets for his side in four matches in the tournament this year and his departure has dented Invincibles’ fortunes of qualifying for playoffs in the Hundred.
Invincibles will also say goodbye to two more of its foreign recruits after the match against Birmingham Phoenix on Tuesday. Sunil Narine will exit the tournament to play in the Caribbean Premier League in the West Indies. While on the other hand, Mohammad Hasnain has been summoned to Pakistan’s Asia Cup squad for 2022 as a replacement for Left Arm quick Shaheen Afridi.
