Los Angeles Knight Riders (LAKR) faced MI New York (MINY) in the sixth match of the Major League Cricket (MLC) 2023 at Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas on Monday. MINY, led by Kieron Pollard, trounced LAKR, led by Sunil Narine, to open their winning account in the competition. MI batted first and scored 155 runs for the loss of eight wickets in 20 overs. LAKR, in reply, were bundled out for a disappointing total of just 50 in 13.5 overs.

Both teams had an unimpressive start to the tournament, losing their first matches. Therefore this match was crucial for both of them to get off the mark. However, LAKR squad appeared disorganized throughout the match, resulting in Narine’s men losing yet another game after a below-par outing.

MI bowled really well: Sunil Narine

With the exception of Tim David and Nicholas Pooran, none of MI’s batters could make a substantial contribution. David finished undefeated, scoring 48 runs in 21 balls, while Pooran added 38 runs in 37 balls. Corinne Dry, Adam Zampa, and Ali Khan each claimed two wickets for the Knight Riders, while Lockie Ferguson claimed one. When LAKR squad began their chase, they were off to a poor start as opener Martin Guptill was dismissed without scoring. Even star batters Riley Rossouw and Andre Russell only managed to score 2 runs each. Their top-scorer was Unmukt Chand with 26 runs.

“We had a good first of the game and that’s about it. MI bowled really well. Not too sure what to say at the moment. We have to reflect, see where we can get better and come back stronger,” said LAKR skipper Narine after the match.

Pollard, after the match said, “I am happy with the end result but not with our batting performance. Losing 5 wickets in the first 10 overs is not acceptable in franchise cricket. This is a new tournament and some of the guys are playing at this level for the first time, you have to give them time. The batters have to take time in the powerplay and assess the conditions. This is done and dusted, we have to come back tomorrow and keep this going. The bowlers stuck to their guns after the first game and delivered.”
