The 37-year-old was one of the young cricketers in the mid-2010s who had the attention of the fans for his stylish way of batsmanship. The Karnataka batter always performed well for his domestic side and was often in the reckoning with the Indian team. The right-handed batter was a crucial part of the Indian team which won the 2007 T20 World Cup.

The right-handed batter played 59 international matches for India. In ODIs, Uthappa scored 934 runs at a batting average of 25.94, at a strike rate of 90.59, including 6 fifty. In T20Is, Uthappa scored 249 runs in 12 innings at a batting average of 24.90, at a batting strike rate of 118.01, including a fifty in the T20 World Cup.

Uthappa did not play an ODI from 2008 to 2013. In T20Is, Uthappa did not play a match from 2008 to 2011. The aggressive batter was constantly in and out of the side, which did not help his confidence. Unfortunately, Uthappa was not preferred by the selectors and the management after 2015, as they looked for younger players.
