‘Position Revived Successfully’- Fans react as Shubman Gill hits a scintillating ton leading India to commanding position against England in 2nd Test
India are steering into a commanding position in the ongoing 2nd test match against England at Visakhapatnam courtesy of some exceptional performances by Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jasprit Bumrah. India got a significant lead of 143 runs in the first innings on a good batting surface which is expected to deteriorate as the match progresses further.
Although it was a substantial lead still it was a job half done for India as they were aware after the 1st test that no score was safe against this dangerous England side with their Bazball approach. India came out with a cautious approach in the 2nd innings, especially against the veteran James Anderson who has turned the clock back and is looking lethal than ever on subcontinent conditions.
Shubman Shreyas steadied the ship after a shaky start
India started Day 3 shakily as they lost both their openers cheaply for just 30 runs including 1st innings double centurion Yashasvi Jaiswal. Now the onus was on Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer who are fighting for a spot in the Indian test team after a string of low scores.
Shubman Gill then took the matter into his own hands and played a gritty yet stylish innings of 104 runs in 147 balls including 11 fours and 2 towering sixes. Since coming down at the No.3 position, Shubman Gill has been out of form and has only averaged in the early 20s which is why there were calls to drop him from the test side doing the rounds in the cricketing circle.
Gill was not looking his old self initially and had his fair share of luck. Gill experienced a stroke of luck early on when a close LBW decision was overturned by the TV umpire, who detected an inside edge. Another tense moment occurred in the next over as an incoming delivery from Anderson struck Gill’s knee roll, but the umpire’s ruling favoured the batsman.
Despite these close calls, Gill’s confidence seemed to grow. He started asserting himself, hitting a straight six off Shoaib Bashir and displaying confidence against the spinners by using his feet. Gill’s aggressive approach was evident when he stepped out to leggie Rehan Ahmed, securing a boundary down the ground, and followed it up with a cover drive to reach his half-century.
