The 2023 World Cup will be played in India. If we consider the time frame when the tournament will be played it is in October and November. Due to the World Cup being in place, the pitches might not be outright flat decks like how India generally plays at home. If the pitches aid spin, then it will be interesting to see who the Men in Blue will pick for the marquee event. With less than 100 days left for the big tournament, Sanjay Manjrekar has given strong views as to who India should pick as the first-choice spinner.

Ahead of the 2023 World Cup, Manjrekar has thrown his weight behind Kuldeep Yadav ahead of Yuzvendra Chahal. Manjrekar has said that in current form, he would say Kuldeep over Chahal. The former India cricketer also felt that in ODIs picking wickets will be very hard where the bowler has to create setups to dismiss batters, unlike T20Is where batters look to go over the top which results in more chances of wickets being picked.

Kuldeep will be my first-choice spinner for the 2023 World Cup – Sanjay Manjrekar

“I don’t think so. Very rarely it can happen depending on the opposition. If there is a real weakness in the opposition to play wrist spin, then you have Kuldeep Yadav and Chahal both playing in the XI,” Manjrekar said.  “I see Chahal being part of the squad but I prefer Kuldeep Yadav when it comes to wrist-spin as the spinner in 50-over cricket. I am getting a little technical here. You need a spinner who can get wickets of batters while they are pushing, not hitting the big shots,” he added.

“In T20 cricket, that is something you see very often. That’s how spinners get wickets. In 50-overs cricket, it’s a game where you push more than you actually slog. So a spinner capable of getting those wickets is Kuldeep Yadav. So he is sort of my first-choice wrist-spinner in the playing XI and then I will be looking at other options,” Manjrekar further elaborated. He however backed Yuzvendra Chahal to be a part of the 2023 World Cup squad.

“What India needs even more in this World Cup are spinners who will get you wickets in the middle to just make the lives of India’s death bowlers easy. Bumrah playing is a slim chance and India have a problem with death bowling and that’s why I would have Chahal in the squad,” The former India cricketer said. Also, he did not sound very optimistic about Jasprit Bumrah returning for the 2023 World Cup.
