New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has been released by the Hyderabad franchise ahead of the Indian T20 League mini-auction set to take place in Kochi on 23rd December. The Kiwi star was the captain of the franchise last season where they finished at the eighth place in the ten-team-tournament. Williamson has been associated with Hyderabad for eight long years and also captained them at various stages.

Williamson will be heading into the auction not being in the best of forms with the bat. It will be interesting to see who places the bid on the experienced campaigner in the auction. Commenting on his chances at the auction the kiwi skipper said that he has no control over it.

“In terms of the auction. You know I’ll have to wait and see. It’s certainly not up to me. People make decisions about their team and what they are after. That’s the nature of how it works,” Williamson told reporters on the eve of the first ODI against India in Auckland.

Williamson scored a half-century in the second T20I against India on Sunday but his strike rate was a major issue.

I still love playing all three formats : Kane Williamson

“I still love playing all three formats. I enjoy switching between the three. As a player, I’m always looking to keep improving. I still have that motivation. It was a bit frustrating, the other night. That’s the way it goes sometimes. I’m still looking at the areas where I can add value,” he said.

After getting knocked out of the 20-20 World Cup in the semi-final both India and New Zealand will begin their preparations for next year’s ODI World Cup. However, Williamson is not thinking too far ahead and is just focused on the upcoming series.

“After a large volume of T20 cricket and the World Cup, naturally the focus shifts to the next one and that is the (global) ODI tournament. (I’m) reluctant to call it preparation, it’s very much focusing on the series at hand and the cricket we want to play. So focusing on what’s in front of us but no doubt there’s a lot more one-day cricket coming up,” added Williamson.

The first ODI of the three-match series between India and New Zealand will be played on 25th November at Eden Park, Auckland starting at 7:00 AM (IST).
