In the realm of international cricket, the rivalry between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka stands as a relatively young yet fiercely competitive one. Its origins can be traced back to February 2018. Nazmul Islam made his T20 International debut against Sri Lanka and celebrated with a ‘Naagin Dance’ after picking up the wicket of Danushka Gunathilaka. In the following game, Gunathilaka mimicked Islam’s celebration after stumping him in the 19th over to secure victory for Sri Lanka. This act angered Bangladesh batsman Mushfiqur Rahim, who deemed it disrespectful and unnecessary.

The ‘Naagin Dance’ saga has continued in recent times with the most recent instance of it happening being in the 2022 Asia Cup. Ahead of a virtual knockout game in the tournament, Sri Lankan skipper, Dasun Shanaka ridiculed Bangladesh by referring to them as an easier opponent as compared to Afghanistan. Then, after the game, Sri Lanka’s Chamika Karunaratne mocked the Bangladesh side with the ‘Nagin dance’ celebration after his side emerged victorious and knocked Bangladesh out of the tournament.

Off the field, the rivalry has been equally captivating, with fans from both nations engaged in banter and social media exchanges. The ‘Nagin dance’ has become a symbol of the rivalry, often used by fans to taunt and provoke each other.

An unprecedented chapter was penned in the enduring rivalry between the two nations during the ODI World Cup match currently underway. Bangladesh chose to field first after winning the toss. In the 25th over of the match, a controversy ignited as Angelo Mathews became the first batsman in the annals of international cricket to be dismissed ‘timed out’.

Upon the dismissal of Sadeera Samarawickrama, Mathews emerged to bat. At that juncture, the strap of his helmet loosened and detached. He requested a replacement helmet from the substitutes stationed in the dugout. Meanwhile, Bangladeshi skipper Shakib Al Hasan appealed to the umpires, citing that Mathews had exceeded the permissible two-minute limit to face the first delivery.

Mathews tried his best to resolve the issue with both the umpires and Shakib, but his efforts proved futile. He was compelled to return to the dugout without facing a single delivery. Mathews’ frustration was palpable, as he threw his helmet before heading to the dressing room.
