Pakistan edged past Bangladesh by a nail-biting five runs in a low-scoring encounter at the Under-19 Cricket World Cup 2024 yesterday, securing their place in the semi-finals of the tournament. In a match filled with twists and turns, both teams displayed commendable grit and fighting spirit, but it was ultimately Pakistan who held their nerve in the closing stages to clinch the victory.

Chasing a modest target of 156 set by Pakistan, Bangladesh started cautiously and hence, lost wickets at regular intervals. Most of the Bangladeshi batters got starts but failed to convert them. They struggled to build partnerships, succumbing to the pressure of the chase. However, just when it seemed Pakistan were cruising to victory, Mahfuzur Rahman and Rohanat Doullah Borson threatened to turn the tables with vital contributions. The tension mounted as the equation narrowed down, but Mohammad Zeeshan and Ali Raza delivered the final blows to knock the defending champions out of the World Cup.

Earlier, Pakistan themselves had been restricted to a below-par 155 in their innings. Arafat Minhas and Shahzaib Khan were the only batsmen to offer some resistance against a disciplined Bangladeshi bowling attack, spearheaded by Sheikh Rayhan (4-20) and Rohanat Doullah Borson (4-24). Despite the modest total, Pakistan’s bowlers, led by the fiery Ubaid Shah (5-44), produced a commendable performance, taking wickets at crucial junctures and applying constant pressure on the Bangladeshi batsmen.

Pakistan got the better of Bangladesh to qualify for the semi-finals and give fans hope for an India-Pakistan Finale.

This victory marks a significant achievement for Pakistan, marking their return to the U19 World Cup semi-finals after a long absence. The win was celebrated with elation by the Pakistani team and their supporters, who witnessed a display of resilience and determination in the face of adversity.
