‘Owned Pakistan once again’- Fans react as Virender Sehwag ridicules Pakistan on social media
Despite facing an uphill battle, Pakistan still harboured a sliver of hope for semifinal qualification heading into their crucial clash against England. The most favourable scenario hinged on Pakistan winning the toss and opting to bat first, allowing them to amass a formidable score. However, fate intervened as England captain Jos Buttler emerged victorious at the coin toss and elected to bat first, dashing Pakistan’s hopes of reaching the knockout stages.
While official records might still suggest a lingering possibility of Pakistan’s advancement, Babar Azam, the team’s captain, will undoubtedly recognize that their World Cup journey has reached its end. This news comes as a crushing blow to Pakistani fans, as their team has failed to reach the semifinals for the third consecutive time. They last made it to the semi-finals in 2011 where they lost to India in Mohali.
Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the ongoing World Cup has been a collective failure, with all three departments– batting, bowling, and fielding– contributing to their struggles. The batters have consistently failed to capitalize on their starts, resulting in underwhelming totals. The pace attack, once considered a major strength, has been largely ineffective, while the spinners have offered little impact. Fielding lapses have added to their woes, and off-field distractions have undoubtedly disrupted their focus.
Virender Sehwag slams Pakistan
Right after the conclusion of the toss, former Indian opener, Virender Sehwag issued a tweet that documented Pakistan’s repeated failures in ODI World Cups. He pointed out that since the turn of the millennium, India has only missed out on the semifinals once, in 2007, while Pakistan has managed to qualify on just a single occasion.
Sehwag’s tweet appears to be a tit-for-tat response to the comments made by some former Pakistani cricketers, including Imran Nazir and Shoaib Akhtar, who mocked India’s loss to England in the semi-finals of the 2022 T20 World Cup. Even Pakistan’s then Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, had joined in the trolling. Sehwag’s tweet also references a couple of instances when the Pakistani cricket board and players had made derogatory remarks about India. He concludes by stating that taking revenge is his way of dealing with such situations.
“Jo Achha vyavhar kare uske saath hum bahut hi achhe, aur jo aisa vyavhar kare toh sahi mauke par soot samet lautana is my way. On field bhi, off-field bhi”, he wrote.
Here, we look at how fans reacted to the tweet by the ‘Nawab of Najafgarh’:
