In the 30th game of the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan locked horns in Pune, Maharashtra. Ahead of the game, the 1996 winners thrashed the defending champions England by eight wickets. On the other hand, the Afghans registered their first-ever win in ODIs against Pakistan. Meanwhile, in the game, the Afghans won the toss and elected to field first.

Dimuth Karunaratne (15), who was playing his first game of the tournament, was trapped by Fazalhaq Farooqi. At 22/1, skipper Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka put together 62 runs for the second wicket. Notably, the former once again, played slowly after making his name as an attacking batter against the likes of South Africa and Pakistan early in the tournament. He scored 39 off 50 balls.

No batter scored a fifty and Pathum Nissanka (46) was the highest scorer for the team. A lot of players got starts but failed to convert them into a big total. The Lankan Lions were bowled out for 241 runs with Farooqi taking four wickets while Mujeeb Ur Rehman took two. On the other hand, the likes of Azmatullah Omarzai and Rashid Khan took one wicket.

Afghanistan beats Sri Lanka by seven wickets

In reply, Afghanistan had a poor start as they lost the early wicket of Rahmanullah Gurbaz for a four-ball duck. Dilshan Madushanka accounted for his wicket with an inswinger over the wicket in the first over. Rahmat Shah and Ibrahim Zadran set a platform with a partnership of 73 runs. While Zadran got 39, Shah scored 62. The latter added another 58 runs with the skipper Hasmatullah Shahidi.

At 131/3, the likes of Shahid and Omarzai put together an unbeaten 111 runs to take the team home. Shah, Shahidi, and Omazai scored a fifty and each and helped the team win the game by seven wickets and 3.4 overs to spare.
