The second Test between New Zealand and Bangladesh kicked off today at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka, with Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto electing to bat first. The hosts had secured a 150-run victory in the opening Test in Sylhet, just a few days prior.

This time around, the Kiwis started well as their bowlers seized control of the second Test against Bangladesh, skittling them out for a mere 172 runs. Bangladesh’s top-scorer, Mushfiqur Rahim, was dismissed after handling the ball, becoming the first Bangladeshi player to fall in this manner.

A few other batters got starts but failed to convert them into substantial contributions on what was an extremely tough wicket to bat on. New Zealand’s spinners were exceptional, with returning star Mitchell Santner and Glenn Phillips claiming three wickets apiece. Ajaz Patel and Tim Southee added two and one wicket, respectively, to Bangladesh’s woes.

The Dhaka Test has moved at an extremely rapid pace thus far.

However, New Zealand’s batters squandered a promising start, losing five wickets for just 55 runs, allowing Bangladesh back into the second Test. Tom Latham, Devon Conway, Kane Williamson, Henry Nicholls, and Tom Blundell all fell victim to the spinners’ wiles, leaving New Zealand reeling at 55 for 5. This dramatic collapse allowed Bangladesh to regain a foothold in the match. New Zealand’s remaining batters will need to find a way to weather the storm of Bangladesh’s spin attack if they are to salvage the match and level the series. Currently, Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips are at the crease.

Bangladesh on the other hand, will aim to seize the momentum by swiftly claiming the remaining five New Zealand wickets and wrapping up the innings. As the pitch deteriorates, each run will become increasingly precious, demanding the best from both teams despite it being merely the second day of the Test match.

Here, we look at how ‘X’ reacted to the fact that 15 wickets fell on Day 1 itself.
